Bakery Scout guide
Ordering a Custom or Wedding Cake
A clear checklist for comparing cake studios, pricing and lead times.
Custom cake quotes are difficult to compare because the visible size is only one part of the work. Design complexity, servings, fillings, structural support, delivery and setup can all change the price. A useful inquiry gives the baker enough detail to quote the same job you have in mind.
Prepare a concise brief
Send the event date, venue or pickup city, guest count, preferred flavours, dietary needs, visual direction and realistic budget range. Reference images are helpful for mood, but ask the artist to adapt the idea rather than copy another baker’s exact work.
Compare servings and scope
A tall display cake and a kitchen sheet cake can serve the same number of guests with very different labour. Confirm whether the quote includes tasting, delivery, setup, stands, fresh flowers, toppers, taxes and deposits.
- How many event-size servings are included?
- What design elements cause additional charges?
- Is delivery available, and who is responsible after handoff?
- When is the final design and guest count due?
- What are the cancellation and change policies?
Book for the bakery’s process
Many cake studios accept a limited number of events each week. Popular dates can fill months ahead, while simple celebration cakes may be available with shorter notice. ‘Custom cakes’ does not imply same-day service; Bakery Scout tracks those signals separately.
Use price examples carefully
A menu price is a snapshot, not a quote. Bakery Scout records Canadian-dollar examples only when a product and price appear together in a source. Use the verification date and open the current menu before budgeting.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
How early should I order a wedding cake?
Start several months ahead for popular wedding dates. The bakery’s calendar, delivery distance and design complexity determine the actual deadline.
Can a custom cake be ordered the same day?
Usually not. Some bakeries advertise ready-made or limited same-day cakes, but a fully custom design normally needs advance notice.
